Thermogenic Spices
By Carla Burns, FITworks! Creator
FITworks is all about using real food to boost your metabolism naturally. By using the science of food induced thermogenics you can really rev up your metabolism. Here are some of the most potent bulge busters I know. They are listed in order of most effective for fat burning qualities. You can add these in any soup, salad, sandwich, or even on your eggs for a spicy change.
Cayenne Pepper - Oxford Polytechnic Institute proved that cayenne pepper stimulates the body's metabolism by approximately 20%. Cayenne also adds great zip to foods.
Hot Peppers - Dr. Henry at Oxford University proved that hot peppers were very effective at stimulating the metabolism by adding just 3 grams of chili peppers to a meal consisting of 766 calories. The peppers led to what Dr. Henry calls a diet-induced thermo effect. "It doesn't take much," he says, "but I caution that you must listen to your taste buds."
Mustard - British investigators added ordinary mustard to a meal, and the hot stuff caused average metabolism in 12 subjects to shoot up 25%! The subjects burned off an extra 45 calories in the next 3 hours. Mustard and hot sauces such as tobassco, caused one person to burn off 76 calories!
Green Tea (Iced or Hot) - Studies have shown that green teas that contain both Cannatic Extract and Gymnemic Acid, reduce absorption of sugar into the blood, and lessen the craving for sweets. More importantly, green tea inhibits the action of amylase, a primary digestive enzyme of carbohydrates, and therefore moves food more quickly through the digestive system, raising the metabolism quicker, and burning more calories. Green tea is best consumed before a meal to aid digestion. Other advantages include links to cancer prevention and health benefits for people with diabetes.
Chili Powder - Like all peppers containing capsaicin, chili powder is a powerful stimulant that raises your body’s temperature and helps you burn calories faster.
Cinnamon - Cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and bay leaves actually have drug-like properties that help us handle the sugar in sweets. These various spices help stimulate insulin activity, which means the body can process sugar more efficiently and therefore needs less insulin. Only a little cinnamon can stimulate insulin activity.
Ginger - An Australian study proved that ginger revs up the metabolism and burns off calories. Biochemists applied both fresh and dried ginger extracts to the tissue of animals and found that the spice induced tissues to use up more than 20% more energy than usual. Chinese herbalists prescribe ginger for weight loss, because of its warming ability. By raising body temperature, ginger helps stimulate the body’s fat burning mechanisms. It has also been proven in Ayurveda medicine (a medicine system from India aimed at balancing the body through diet, meditation, herbs and massage, so the body can heal itself), to help relieve arthritic pain. Slice up ginger root and eat it with stir-fry, or boil it and drink as tea, 3 times per day.
Garlic - Garlic heats up the immune system and is known for its healing properties for colds and flu. Garlic is another potent diuretic and an excellent weight loss aid.
Parsley - The ancient Greeks used parsley as an aphrodisiac and to enhance beauty and youthfulness. Today, parsley is primarily used to stimulate the circulatory system, increase energy and fight water retention. Most people also know it as a breath freshener. You can use parsley in any recipe.
